Merrimack College Athletic Department's Mission Statement
In keeping with the Augustinian tradition of community, which
promotes the unity of the heart and mind, we are committed to
providing student-centered programs which foster and sustain
student learning and personal development in all its dimensions of
community: intellectual, physical, social, cultural, emotional and
spiritual. We recognize that learning and development involves both
thought and action, and we form partnerships with our colleagues in
faculty and academic administration to create a seamless learning
environment which “awakens the mind and hearts” of our
students.
The mission of the Department of Athletics is consistent with the
college’s commitment to the total education of its
undergraduates. The department supports student’s development
through a variety of varsity and intramural programs. The goals of
the department’s programs are to promote active student
involvement, the acquisition of leadership skills and abilities,
openness to and respect for all persons. In addition the department
will advance opportunities for athletic skill development, high
standards for health and well-being and social and recreational
interactions. These goals are achieved through NCAA athletic
participation and a wide range of sports and intramural programs
designed to stimulate discipline, dedication, social
responsibility, sportsmanship, intellectual and personal growth,
and integrity.
The educational purposes of the college and the welfare and
commitment of the student athletes to their education are paramount
considerations within each program and are not compromised in the
pursuit of competitive excellence. The department recognizes the
priorities of the student-athlete as being first an individual,
second a student and third an athlete.
