WEEK 24 (MEN): JUVARIS HAYES (Men's Basketball | Freshman | Paterson, N.J.)
Freshman point guard Juvaris Hayes of the Merrimack College men's basketball team has been named the Fuddruckers Male Athlete of the Week following his 21-point effort in Merrimack's upset victory over top-seeded Le Moyne in the East Regional of the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Championship.
Hayes played in 44 of 45 minutes against the Dolphins as the Warriors needed overtime to knock off the regional hosts. He added seven assists, six rebounds and four steals as Merrimack won in the quarterfinal round in the program's ninth NCAA Tournament appearance. It marked the first appearance since 2010 and the third straight appearance overall that the Warriors reached the regional semifinals
The NE10 Rookie of the Year and all-conference second-team performer spurned Merrimack's comeback in the regional semifinals, dishing out nine assists against Saint Thomas Aquinas. The Warriors used a 13-4 run in the second half to turn an eight-point deficit into a 69-68 lead with two minutes to play.
Hayes finished the seaons with 287 assists, owning the program's single-season record, a mark that stood for 40 years. He totaled the second-most helpers ever in NE10 history, falling 22 assists short of the conference record, and tied for the 14th most all-time in Division II history.
