NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After the official opening of the
brand-new Strength and Conditioning Center last week, the next
phase of the Merrimack Athletic Center Expansion Project, the
opening of nine new locker rooms, has taken place as Merrimack fall
teams arrive for preseason camps.
Nine new men's and women's locker rooms, housed
adjacent to the Strength and Conditioning Center and the
soon-to-open Sports Medicine Center, have opened their doors for
more than 15 athletic programs.
The new locker rooms, spacious in size and equipped with brand
new lockers for each individual student-athlete, as well as many
other amenities, will give all of Merrimack's continually
growing palette of varsity programs a bit more breathing room and
more personal space that a team can call its own.
In total, nine new locker rooms have opened for business, five
for women's programs and four for men's. The
women's programs that have new locker rooms to call home are:
field hockey, women's soccer, softball, women's
lacrosse, and a general purpose locker room for women's crew,
cross country, golf, swimming, tennis and track & field . On
the men's side, baseball, men's lacrosse, men's
soccer and a general purpose room for men's cross country,
tennis and track & field bring the total number of varsity
programs benefitting from new locker rooms to an impressive 18.
Each new locker room comes equipped with:
- New locker stalls for each student-athlete
- New stools and seating arrangements for team meetings
- State-of-the-art, hi-definition televisions and equipment for
film review
- New showers and bathroom stalls
“Our new locker room, and all of our new
facilities, are greatly appreciated, from each and every
coaching staff, to all of our student-athletes," head field hockey
coach Anne Rounce mentioned. "I think all of this shows the
College's continued support toward our Athletic Department, and
this certainly adds support for our collective goals, for each and
every program on campus, to achieve a National Championship."
"This certainly is a very special time in the 30-plus years that
I've been around this campus," head men's soccer coach Tony Martone
added. "With our new locker room, plus the new weight room, a new
center for Sports Medicine ... All of it combined sets a new
standard for other colleges to emulate. We coaches could not be
prouder to be a part of it now more than ever."
The 2013-14 athletic year officially begins Thursday, Sept. 5,
when the men's soccer team faces Dominican as part of the
Marriott Kick-Off Classic.
