SLIPPERY ROCK, PA – James Suozzo rushed for a school-record four touchdowns, but the Merrimack football team dropped its season opener 45-26 to Slippery Rock University Thursday night in front of 6,513 fans at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

NORTH ANDOVER — Last fall the Northeast-10 football coaches named Merrimack quarterback James Suozzo the first sophomore league MVP in the 13-year history of the award. The rest of the country obviously has caught on as the D2messageboard.com website held its annual draft and, out of the 149 Division 2 college football teams nationally, Suozzo was the No. 1 overall pick.
