"I am thrilled for both Joe and Rob!" said Dennehy. "They are very different people, but share a passion for hockey. They both did a great job in sharing the leadership last year as assistant captains. You do not have to be one of the best players on a team to be a captain, but it helps. Ricci led the Warriors in points (34), assists (21), and power-play goals (6) in 2007-08. He ranked 13th in Hockey East in scoring and 15th in assists. A two-time team MVP, he also led Merrimack in scoring in 2005-06 when he was a freshman.
Loprieno chipped in with five points (two goals, three assists) and tallied a team-high 74 penalty minutes. He scored the game-winner in a 4-3 at Brown University. Last season, he received the Warrior Award, which goes to the player who shows perseverance, toughness and dedication to the Merrimack program. He is known as one of the toughest blue liners to play against in the conference because of his physical style.
Both Ricci and Loprieno were named assistant captains for the remainder of the 2007-08 season on January 24, 2008.
Merrimack will host McGill in an exhibition game at Lawler Arena on October 4 at 7 p.m. before opening the regular season against Robert Morris on October 11 at Lawler at 7 p.m.
