NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – After a historic outing on Saturday that included a nine-point afternoon as part of a 12-point week, freshman attack Tyler Liantonio (Locust Valley, N.Y.) of the Merrimack College men's lacrosse team has been named Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.
Liantonio, who hauls in his first weekly accolade from the conference, joins fellow freshman Charlie Bertrand (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) and sophomore Edward Hellier (South Portland, Maine) as the only Warriors to earn weekly recognition from the conference this season. Bertrand has been named NE10 Rookie of the Week on four previous occasions, while Hellier was also named the league's top goalkeeper in the first week of the season.
As the rest of his team helped combine for the most prolific offensive outing in program history in Saturday's win at AIC, Liantonio became the first player to record nine or more points in a game for Merrimack in four years, as he finished with six goals and three assists on Saturday. The last Merrimack player to do that was Greg Melaugh '13 in an 11-point outing. He ranked second on the team in scoring last week with 12 points (8 goals, 4 assists), as he also had a goal and two assists in Merrimack's win at Franklin Pierce on Tuesday.
After his impressive pair of outings last week, Liantonio has now appeared in six games in his debut season with the Warriors and has racked up 12 points on eight goals and four assists. On the season, he is the third-highest rookie scorer on the team and ranks ninth overall.
Liantonio and the rest of the Warriors return to action this week with two more contests in the penultimate week of the regular season. The team hosts Assumption on Wednesday (April 19) on Senior Night before facing top-ranked Limestone on Sunday in Maryland.
