ALBANY, NY – The Merrimack men's soccer team closed out the 2011 regular season with a 1-0 victory at Saint Rose Friday afternoon. The Warriors improved to 9-6-3 on the year and 7-5-1 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Golden Knights finish with a 1-16-0 overall record and 0-13 mark in the league.
Robbie Sabadoz (Ottawa, ON) scored his eighth goal of the 2011 campaign in the 32nd minute of the match. Victor Plaza (Jundiai, Brazil) sent a through-ball down the center of the pitch for Sabadoz to run on to. The striker caught up to the ball and dribbled around the goalkeeper before finishing it into the open net to give Merrimack a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors finished the first half with a 7-2 edge in shots. Saint Rose earned four corner kicks in the opening period while conceding one.
Merrimack dominated the second half with a 9-1 advantage in shots in the final 45 minutes of play. The Warriors outshot the hosts 16-3 to finish the match. Nicholas Lo Coco (Gloucester, MA) paced Merrimack with four shots and three on frame on the day.
The Golden Knights picked up both corner kicks awarded in the second stanza.
Evan Berube (Uxbridge, MA) needed to make just one save to earn his first career clean sheet. Patrik Ohlsson stopped seven shots in the contest for Saint Rose.
"This was a good win for us today and we needed it. I thought we played well from the start and we had some good chances on goal," said head coach Tony Martone. "We will go back to work with some hard practices in order to prepare for the playoffs."
Merrimack has clinched a playoff spot and will travel for the first round of the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament. The Warriors will learn of their first-round opponent after the completion of the final four matches remaining around the league.
