NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Sophomore midfielder Lars Sund (Stavanger, Norway) was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-American Third Team on Thursday afternoon, headlining multiple NSCAA honorees from the Merrimack College men's soccer program.
Sund was also named to the All-East Region First Team, joined senior center back Joseph Briers (Nottingham, England) and senior midfielder Oscar Zepeda Cagide (Jalisco, Mexico) as all-region performers. Briers landed on the all-region second team while Zepeda Cagide was recognized on the third team.
On the year, Merrimack's second-year attacking midfielder registered career highs across the board with 18 points on five goals and eight assists. He led the Warriors in both goals and assists, finishing in a tie for third in the Northeast-10 Conference in helpers. Sund earned an all-conference first team selection and was named the NE10 Player of the Week following his five-point performance against Southern Connecticut.
Briers entered the season as an All-American center back and was rewarded with all-region and all-conference honors despite missing time due to multiple injuries. In 15 games, all of which were starts, the Nottingham native totaled five points on two goals and an assist. Both of his strikes were of the game-winning variety while anchoring a defense that allowed just 0.98 goals per game.
Zepeda Cagide was honored on his first all-region team after boasting all-conference distinction for the first time as well. He came on strong to score three goals over the season's final seven games, and emerged as one of the Warriors' top possession players in the central midfield. He scored on both of his attempts from the penalty dot, including an equalizer in the conference semifinals vs. Le Moyne.
The three all-region selections equals the total the program boasted last season, while Sund's All-American distinction goes down as the third straight year the program has had an All-American student-athlete.
