NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Senior midfielder Oscar Zepeda Cagide (Jalisco, Mexico) and senior forward Jaime Cortes Torres (Seville, Spain) of the Merrimack College men's soccer team were named 2016 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) NCAA Division II Men's Scholar All-East Region selections on Friday morning, as announced by the NSCAA.
Zepeda Cagide landed on the All-East Region First Team by boasting a 3.78 cumulative grade-point-average, and was one of four midfielders on the squad. Cortes Torres was a selection on the second team after he became the third player in program history to earn CoSIDA Academic All-American distinction with his 3.98 GPA.
Both players posted career years in their finals seasons with the Navy and Gold. Zepeda Cagide was a Northeast-10 All-Conference Third Team selection, the first all-league nod of his career. The attacking midfielder netted four goals to tie his career high and finished 2-of-2 from the penalty dot. He added eight points as one of three captains of the Warriors.
Cortes Torres pocketed six goals, along tying his personal best, as Merrimack's starting striker this past season. He earned all-league second team honors for his efforts, which included a pair of assists and 14 points. Three of Cortes Torres' tallies were of the game-winning variety, and he finished his four-year career with 39 points in 59 career games over the past three season.
Zepeda Cagide and Cortes Torres were part of three straight NCAA Tournament teams from their sophomore years and on, winning 15 games each season. This fall the Navy and Gold advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round for the third consecutive season.
