NORTH ANDOVER, MA. – The Merrimack women’s
basketball team led by 19 points at halftime but could not hold the
lead, dropping a 66-62 decision to the College of Saint Rose
Saturday afternoon at the Volpe Gym.
The Warriors came out flying, taking a 37-18 lead into the locker
room at halftime, behind a 19-0 run that spanned nine minutes and
ended with a three-pointer from Casey Miller (Fairbanks, AK.).
Merrimack out rebounded the Golden Knights 27-17 in the first half
and limited the visitors to just seven field-goals on 30 shots
(23.3%).
The second half however was a reverse mirror image of the first as
the Golden Knights, after a three-point play from Takeya Faison
(Lynn, MA.), went on a 12-0 run to start the half to cut the lead
to 40-30, that included five straight points from Emily Gottstein,
who finished with a game-high 24, including 10-of-13 from the
free-throw line. Saint Rose kept pressing and finally tied it at 51
with 7:22 to play in regulation behind two free throws from
Elizabeth Buckley. Two free throws from Dana Brown gave Saint Rose
its first lead and capped off runs of 35-11 and 18-2 in the second
frame.
A free throw from Ashley Anderson with 1:46 remaining put Saint
Rose ahead 59-58, and they held on from there, extending its lead
to five at 64-59 with 23 seconds left behind two more free throws
from Anderson after Miller’s three-point tying attempt was
blocked by Gottstein. Merrimack had one last chance to tie,
trailing 65-62 with 14 seconds remaining, but Amanda
Shannon’s (North Andover, MA) three went off the back
rim.
Four players registered double-figures in scoring for the Warriors,
led by 14 for Gately Golden (Fair Haven, NJ). Faison and Kara
Borelli (Westbrook, ME) added 13 each, while Shannon posted 10
points and seven assists.
Anderson grabbed 14 rebounds and posted five steals in 37 minutes,
while Dana Brown scored 18 points and dished out five assists.
Saint Rose shot 52% from the field in the second half and was
25-for-32 from the line in the game.
