Women's Basketball Concludes Season with 62-58 Loss to Bryant
NORTH ANDOVER, MA. – The Merrimack women’s
basketball team saw its season end Tuesday night with a 62-58 loss
to Bryant University at the Volpe Gym. The Warriors finish the
season 9-19 overall, 5-17 in the Northeast-10.
Amanda Shannon (North Andover, MA) led the Warriors with 23 points,
while senior Kara Borelli (Westbrook, ME) added 13 points and nine
rebounds. Her classmate Ashley Brownlee (Portland, ME) tallied 12
points and eight boards.
The Warriors finally took their first lead early in the second half
at 28-27 following a jumper from Brownlee. Shannon capped off a
15-4 Merrimack run over the first 3:19 of the final frame to take a
38-31 lead, but Bryant came back, using an 8-0 run late in the
second half, while Merrimack went 10:25 without scoring a field
goal and 6:02 without a point before Shannon sank a free throw to
give the Warriors the 52-51 lead with 3:04 remaining.
The final 2:12 saw three tie scores and seven points from Shannon.
She tied the score at 58 with one minute to play after Kelsey
O’Keefe took a pass from Lynne-Ann Kokoski to give the
Bulldogs the short-lived two-point lead. Courtney Schermerhorn
converted two free-throws with 20-seconds to play that gave the
Bulldogs the 60-58 lead. With seniors Borelli and Gately Golden
(Fair Haven, NJ) on the bench with five fouls each, the Warriors
turned to Shannon with 8.8 seconds left, down two, but the inbounds
pass was thrown out of bounds.
O’Keefe got Bryant off to a fast start, scoring the
game’s first six points. The Warriors closed the lead and
finished the half down four at 27-23 behind 11 points from Shannon.
Both teams struggled from the field, as Bryant shot 35.5% with
Merrimack shooting 33.3% (9-for-27).
O’Keefe posted a double-double on 21 points and 10 rebounds,
while Siamone Bennett added seven points, 10 boards, and four
blocks. Kokoski, Bryant’s lone senior, tallied 17 points.
Before the game, seniors Takeya Faison (Lynn, MA), Gately Golden
(Fair Haven, NJ), Ashley Brownlee (Portland, ME) and Kara Borelli
(Westbook, ME) were honored as part of Senior Night. These seniors
conclude a stellar four-year career that featured a trip to the
Final Four as freshmen.
