Women’s Tennis Clinches Playoff Berth with Sweep at American International

LUDLOW, MA- The Merrimack women's tennis team blanked American International 9-0 Thursday afternoon at the Ludlow Tennis Club. The Warriors improve to 9-12 overall and 8-4 in the Northeast-10 Conference with the win. The Yellow Jackets sink to 0-12 on the year and 0-13 in league play with the result.

Merrimack secured a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament with its eighth league win of the season. The Warriors will occupy the No. 5 or 6 seed in the Northeast-10 Tournament.

The visitors claimed three doubles wins to own a 3-0 advantage at the midway point. Kara Hole (Portsmouth, RI) and Mollie Fitzgerald (Melrose, MA) breezed to an 8-0 victory at the No. 1 position. Shakee Messina (Caracas, Venezuela) and Erin McMahon (Wilmington, MA) posted an 8-0 win at the No. 2 spot. Courtney Garvey (Woburn, MA) and Heather Kent (Auburn, NH) prevailed 8-2 at the third slot.

Merrimack sealed the win with six singles points, sweeping all six matches.

Messina coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 decision at the top spot while Hole also rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 2 position. Garvey cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at the third slot and Fitzgerald earned a 6-0, 6-0 result at the fourth match. McMahon glided to a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 5 position while Kent earned her first win of the season, prevailing 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 6 slot.

Merrimack will remain on the road as it visits American International April 12.
