Women’s Track and Field Starts Indoor Season Strong at Harvard Open

CAMBRIDGE, MA- The Merrimack women's track and field team had a good showing in its first meet of the 2011-12 indoor schedule. The Warriors sent a contingent of sprinters and jumpers to the Harvard Open Saturday.

Any athlete could enter into the meet. Many colleges were represented as well as running clubs.

Desiree DeLeon (Salem, MA) led the sprinters as she was the top finisher in the 60 meter and 200 meter dash events for the Warriors, posting Northeast-10 qualifying marks in both races. The rookie claimed 49th place in the 60 meter dash with a time of 8.54 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, she clocked in with a time of 28.60 seconds to finish 62nd.

Mary Murphy (Boxborough, MA) came in with a time of 8.67 seconds in the 60 meter dash to qualify for the Northeast-10 Championships

Murphy posted a mark of 29.06 seconds in the 200 meter dash and Leah Hall (Lynn, MA) was close behind with a time of 29.06.

Hall, Merrimack's lone entrant in the 400 meter dash, captured 44th with a time of 1:08.11 in the event.

In the jumping events, the Warriors had a pair compete in the high jump and long jump. Ashley Wright (Somersworth, NH) qualified for the conference championship meet by clearing 1.40 meters in the high jump to secure 14th place while Elizabeth Fitzgerald (Maynard, MA) recorded a mark of 1.35 meters to earn a 20th-place finish.

In the long jump, Janelle Clark (Springfield, MA) leaped 4.35 meters to claim 26th place and earn a spot in the field at the Northeast-10 Championships. DeLeon registered a jump of 3.60 meters to finish in 28th.

"Today was a very positive first meet for our young team. It showed our athletes worked hard this fall in preparation for today. To have more than half of our athletes who competed, qualify for the conference meet is a successful day," said head coach Matt Pimentel.

Merrimack's second meet of the season is slated for January 14 at the Tufts Invitational.
