Women’s Track and Field Places 9th In Northeast-10 Championships at Southern Connecticut


NEW HAVEN, CT – The Merrimack women's track and field team placed 9th this weekend in the Northeast-10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Merrimack began the meet with field events. Janelle Clark (Springfield, Mass.) was the only Warrior to compete in an event on the first day, competing in the triple jump event finishing 8th with a combined distance of 10.49 meters.

The Warriors then began their track events for the day. In the 200 meter dash, Desiree DeLeon (Salem, Mass.) and Leah Hall (Lynn, Mass.) participated and finished with times of 28.33 and 28.80 seconds respectively. Briana Devereaux (Londonderry, NH) ran in the 800 meter event for Merrimack. She placed just outside of the top 10 with a time of 2:25.01.
Devereaux also competed in the 1,500 meter run and put forth a record-setting performance. She shattered her pervious school record of 4:46.00 by placing 4th overall in the event with a finals time of 4:42.90. That time earned her a spot in the New England Championships next weekend. Kayla Morong (Topsham, ME) also ran in the 1,500 meter event and finished at 5:09.04.

In the 5,000 meter run, the Warriors had three participants who all finished strongly. Anne Bajor (Methuen, Mass.) led the way for Merrimack with a near personal best time of 18:18.77. She would finish in 3rd place overall. Kelsey Grimmer (Shelton, Conn.) was next with a time of 19:11.00 followed by Ashley Sarris (Shelton, Conn.) at 19:21.00. They finished 9th and 11th overall respectively. Sarris also competed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase event and placed 4th with a time of 11:52.83. Christine Manfra (Stoneham, Mass.) recorded a time of 1:13.08 for the Warriors in the 400 meter hurdles event.

Rebecca Ainscow (Derry, NH) picked up a 5th place finish in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 40:30.03.

In relays, the Warriors had one team each compete in the 4x100, 4x400, and 4x800 meter events. The team of DeLeon, Manfra, Ashley Wright (Somersworth, NH), and Mary Murphy (Boxborough, Mass.) took 8th in the 4x100 meter event with a time of 53.06 seconds. DeLeon, Manfra, and Murphy, along with Anne Bajor competed in the 4x400 meter relay and finished with a time of 4:25.88 which was good for 7th place. Finally, in the 4x800 meter relay, the team of Julie Binney (South Easton, Mass.), Andrea Chapa-Cerviatti (Worcester, Mass.), Kayla Morong, and Briana Devereaux captured 6th place with a time of 10:01.94.

The final event of the season for the women's track and field team is the New England Championships which will be held next Saturday, May 12.
