BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Senior captain Carly Muscaro (Ashland, Mass.) will look to defend her Indoor National Title in the 400m dash on Saturday after posting the top time in the 400m preliminary round by by more than a full second on Thursday, while sophomore Michaela Pernell (Naugatuck, Conn.) finished 13th in the 60m preliminaries in her first individual Nationals appearance on the first day of the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field National Championships
Event: 2017 NCAA Indoor Championships
Day 1 Results: Pernell (60m Prelim - 13th, 7.62) | Muscaro (400m Prelim - 1st, 52.80)
Location: CrossPlex Complex | Birmingham, Ala.
How It Happened
- Entering the 2017 Indoor Championships with the best time in the nation in the 400m as well as the only sub-53-second time in Division II, Muscaro would again drop below 53 seconds to post the top time in the 400m preliminaries on Thursday. The owner of the second-best time in Division II history posted a time of 52.80 in the prelims, blowing away the rest of the field by more than a full second to earn the top seed in Saturday's final. The closest time to Muscaro in the first round was a full 1.12 seconds behind.
- The owner of that next closest time and Muscaro's toughest competition entering Saturday's final is a familiar foe in Johnson C. Smith's Tovea Jenkins, who placed third in the indoor 400m national finals last year and finished second behind the two-time national champion in the 400m at the 2016 Outdoor Championships.
- Competing in her first-ever individual appearance at the NCAA Championships in just her second season, Pernell ran well in her signature 60m dash event, posting a time of 7.62 to finish 13th in a field of 19 of the fastest runners in Division II. While only the top-eight runners advance to the 60m final on Saturday, Pernell's weekend is not over. She and Muscaro will go for a national title when they run in the finals of the 4x400m relay on Saturday evening.
Muscaro will look to repeat her national title in the 400m final on Saturday at 4:35 p.m. But before that, she will also run in the 200m preliminary round tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. Muscaro and Pernell will both race in the 4x400m final on Saturday at 6:15 p.m. All the action can be seen live at www.ncaa.com/liveschedule
