What They Said
Head coach Jacky Mendes, "This was the best start to the outdoor track season in Merrimack history. The Warriors took full advantage of great weather and 53 schools to compete against, breaking multiple school records during the trip. We've started the outdoor season just as strongly as we finished the indoor season, and more great things are to come."
How It Happened
- Just a week removed from winning two individual National Titles for the first time in her career and posting the highest individual score of any woman or man at the 2017 NCAA Division II Indoor Championships, senior captain Carly Muscaro (Ashland, Mass.) jumped right into the outdoor season by posting the top time in the 200m in a field filled with Division I runners. Muscaro registered a time of 23.78, edging out a pair of runners from Clemson for the top time.
- Also fresh off her first-ever individual appearance at the Indoor Championships last weekend, sophomore Michaela Pernell (Naugatuck, Conn.) kicked off her outdoor season strong, as she too would edge plenty of DI competition to earn a third-place finish in the 100m in Charlotte, running a time of 11.96 in the prelims on her way to a top-three finish in the finals The time is an NCAA provisional qualifier.
- Muscaro and Pernell would also shine in relay events, as they would be joined by senior Kiana Weary (Brockton, Mass.) and rookie Savanna Spencer (Seabrook, N.H.) to finish fifth in the 4x400m with the third-best time in school history at 3:48.15. They would also run the 4x100m with senior Chantal Sayegh (Melrose, Mass.) and junior Leniesha Williams (Bennington, Vt.), finishing sixth with the second-best time in school history at 47.66.
- Senior captains Olivia Downey (Melrose, Mass.) and Sarah Barnett (Bridgewater, Mass.) would each perform well for the women. Downey would finish 11th in the 400m hurdles, posting a New England-qualifying time of 1:04.93. Barnett would run a time of 15.70 in the 100m hurdles, and toss a 11.33m shot put.
The Warriors continue the outdoor season next week at the Bridgewater State Bears Invitational.
