After sharing the nationwide lead in scoring last week in just two games, freshman forwardÂ
Chase Gresock of the Merrimack College men's ice hockey team has been named Fuddruckers Male Athlete of the Week for the first time this season.
Gresock, who also was named Hockey East's Player of the Week for the first time, was one of seven players nationwide to finish with five points last week, but one of only four to do so in two games, including the only player in Hockey East, averaging 2.50 per contest. The rookie went off for a career-high three points in Merrimack's first-ever win against Michigan on Tuesday on the road, netting the game-winning tally in the process while assisting on two others. He then added two more (1g, 1a) in Merrimack's 5-2 romp of UConn on Saturday night at Lawler Rink, assisting on the deciding goal. In addition to his scoring output, Gresock finished with a +3 rating and five shots on goal while adding two blocked shots.
On the year, the rookie forward now has 15 points (6g, 9a) – the second-highest total on the team – along with a team-leading 70 shots on goal (5
th/Hockey East). He ranks tied for fourth at the league level in game-winning goals (2) and seventh in freshman scoring. He is riding a season-high three-game goal streak and has a three-game point streak as well (3-3—6). Those numbers have coincided with Merrimack's longest win streak of the season (3), and Gresock has either scored or assisted on the game-winning in each of those contests.
Gresock and the rest of the Warriors play just once this week, on Friday night against the University of New Hampshire at 7:30 p.m.Â
