Following her Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week selection, freshman Alyssa Casey of the women's basketball program has been named this week's Fuddruckers Female Athlete of the Week.
Casey averaged 20.0 points and 9.5 rebounds per game over two contests for the Warriors, a 18-point win over Georgian Court and a two-point loss to No. 25 Caldwell. Casey shot 50 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from three-point range, making 17-of-34 of her field-goal attempts and 4-of-11 from distance. She started both of Merrimack's games over the weekend, averaging 29.0 minutes per contest.
Following her 19-point performance in her first-ever collegiate game against Georgian Court, Casey starred for the Warriors in their near upset of 25th-ranked Caldwell University. She scored 21 points and pulled down a game-high 17 rebounds, shooting 9-of-17 overall and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc.
The rookie's 17 boards marked the most for a Merrimack player since the 2012-13 campaign. She emerged from the opening weekend leading all NE10 freshmen in scoring – ranking fourth overall in the league – while her rebounding average puts her eighth in the conference.
Casey and the Warriors play two games this week beginning Wednesday in Merrimack's NE10 opener at Assumption.Â
