After shooting the best round in program history to kickstart the 2018-19 year, senior Krystal Knight of the Merrimack College women's golf program was named this week's Fuddruckers Female Athlete of the Week.
Knight, last year's Northeast-10 Conference medalist and a two-time NCAA Super Regional qualifier, had rewrote just about every history book after her dominant 2017-18 season. She wasted little time in adding even more history during her first tournament as a senior, carding an opening round score of three-over-par 75 on Sunday to take a one-stroke lead into Monday.
The senior captain destroyed the field with a round for the ages; her five-under-par 67 was three strokes lower than her prior single-round best – also setting a new program record for lowest single round ever recorded. There were no dramatics needed on Monday, as Knight was 10 strokes better than the next-best competitor in the second round and won the tournament going away by 14 strokes.
Merrimack returns to action in two weeks when it heads to Keene, New Hampshire, to participate in the Franklin Pierce Fall Invitational hosted at the Keene Country Club on Sept. 23-24.
