Seniors Germano, Gisonno Lead #10 Field Hockey to Third Straight
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Finishing their regular season home
schedule 7-1 on the year, the Merrimack field hockey Warriors
(11-6, 6-2 NE-10) set a program record for wins in a season with 11
on Sunday afternoon following a win over Adelphi University, 2-0.
Seniors Jaclyn Germano (Westwood, MA),
Kelly Pasquantonio (Planville, MA),
Katelin Gisonno (Georgetown, MA), Krista
Gordon (Wakefield, MA) and Allison Doliner
(Norwood, MA) were recognized before the game in their
final regular season home game as Merrimack College Warriors.
Head Coach Anne Rounce spoke after the game of
the senior class and what they have meant to the program.
“It's been fun watching them develop into such great
teammates,” Rounce said. “They look out for one another
and have set a high standard for field hockey at Merrimack College.
They're a special class and will be missed not just for their play
on the field, but how they have fostered the growth of our
underclassmen.”
To open the scoring, captain Germano scored late in the second
half on a diving attempt following a feed from sophomore
Sarah Salatto (Guilford, CT). Scoring her 13th
goal of the year, Germano is the Warriors leading goal-scorer on
the year along with freshman Jen Otis' (Penacook,
NH) baker's dozen. With four more points, Germano
will tie the single-season scoring record at Merrimack (34 points).
Senior Gisonno also tallied her third goal of the year in the
65th minute to add insurance to the Warriors' lead. She was
assisted by freshman Katie Zubkus (Dover, NH) who
Rounce said was a difference-maker in the game as she has been all
year.
“[Katie] really helped us control the midfield and limit
chances for Adelphi,” Rounce said. “We just played
extremely tough out there and didn't let up. I like the
direction our team is going heading towards the postseason and
we're all looking forward to Stonehill this week”
Firing 29 shots in the game, Merrimack controlled possession for
the majority of the afternoon in a light drizzle turned snow
flurry. Freshman Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA)
turned aside all three shots on goal that she faced in her
program-record 11th win of the season.
With the win, Merrimack pulls ahead of Adelphi for the No. 4
spot in the Northeast-10 and would earn a home playoff game if they
remain there through the final two games against #4 Stonehill
College and Saint Michael's College.
The Warriors return to action against Stonehill on Wednesday in
Easton, Massachusetts at 4:00pm.
