Field Hockey Advances to Semifinals With Win Over Adelphi
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – For the third time this season, the
Merrimack field hockey Warriors knocked off the Panthers of Adelphi
University, this time it meant a trip to the Conference semifinals
at top-seeded Stonehill College.
With the 2-1 win, the Warriors advance to the Northeast-10
Conference semifinals on Saturday to play top-seeded Stonehill
College (9-1 NE-10) in Easton, Massachusetts at 11:00am.
Freshman April Daugherty (Lincoln, RI) scored
her 12th goal of the year to put the Warriors up in the 15th
minute. She was assisted by classmate Katie Zubkus (Dover,
NH) when the single-season points leader (40 points) found
the back of the net on a redirection.
Sophomore forward Sarah Salatto (Guilford, CT)
scored the eventual game-winner when she buried a rebound seven
minutes into the second half.
Adelphi would pull to within one with an Emilee Rahner-goal in
the 62nd minute, but the net-minding by freshman Kerri
Bergquist (Mashpee, MA) with four second half saves kept
the Panthers at bay.
Head Coach Anne Rounce said following the
contest, "Victoria DeLacey and Katie Zukus controlled the game for
us in the midfield and that's why we won the game. They did a
great job of controlling the ball on offense and on defense."
