Women's Soccer Drops Double OT Decision at AIC
SPRINGFIELD, MA – Despite an Ashley Alnwick
(Groton, MA) goal in the 13th minute, the Merrimack
women's soccer team could not hold on against American
International in Springfield Saturday morning, eventually falling
2-1 in double-overtime.
In the Warriors second straight double-overtime decision,
Merrimack registered 25 shots on goal, including a penalty shot
late in the first half. Alnwick's fifth goal of the season
came from an assist by junior Jessie DeGraan (Braintree,
MA).
Senior Brittany Gustafson (East Hampton, CT)
played the entire game in net for Merrimack stopping seven shots on
18 Yellow Jacket shots.
Merrimack Head Coach Gabe Mejail felt the Warriors had their
chances to score, but ascribes the American International win to
the Yellow Jackets determined play.
“[American International] is a quality team coming off a big
win over Pace,” Mejail said. “We had so many
opportunities, but just could not convert. We need to get things
together before we play Saint Anselm. Today we just didn't do
the things you need to do to beat the top teams.”
The first Warrior loss in four games drops Merrimack to 8-3-1
overall and 5-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference.
With Saint Anselm on Tuesday, October 6 at 4:00pm in Manchester,
the Warriors look to get back on track after snapping a three-game
win streak on Saturday.
