#9 Field Hockey Falls Shorts of #7 Bentley
WALTHAM, MA – Snapping a two-game win streak, the #9
Merrimack field hockey Warriors (8-6, 3-2 NE-10) fell at the hands
of the #7 Bentley University Falcons on the road Wednesday
evening.
After falling behind 3-0 in the first half, including a goal 29
seconds into the match from Joyce Grodovich, senior captain
Jaclyn Germano (Westwood, MA) put the Warriors on
the board as halftime approached. Germano scored again in the 57th
minute, but with the score 5-1 before the goal, the Warriors could
not overcome the incessant pressure of the Falcons.
“I thought we were going to make a run in the second half,
but Bentley's attack was just too much,” Head Coach
Anne Rounce said following a match-up with the
cross-town rival.
Bentley's pressure on Merrimack also showed up on paper as
the Falcons out-shot Merrimack 20-7 on the night.
“Sarah [Salatto] was big
for us in stepping up, but I think the ten-day lay-off hurt us in
the end,” said Rounce. “We're excited to get back
at it on Friday against Assumption.”
Freshman goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA)
made 15 saves in the game, her third highest total of the year.
Alone at the top of the league in terms of saves per game (10.21),
the freshman also boasts a save-percentage (.773) worthy of second
behind Lucia Vigliotti (.790) of Adelphi University.
The Warriors return to action on Friday for a make-up game at
Assumption College, beginning at 3:30pm in Worcester,
Massachusetts.
