Women's Basketball Drops Season-Opener at Dowling
OAKDALE, NY - Despite a career-high 27 points from sophomore
Genn Roy (Granby, MA), the Merrimack women's
basketball Warriors dropped their season-opener Sunday night at
Dowling College, 95-86.
The 86 points is the second most the Warriors have scored in
five years, but the 96 for Dowling is the most points Merrimack has
given up since November 21, 2000 when they surrendered 102 to
Bentley on the road.
Roy also tied her career-high of four assists in Merrimack's
non-conference opener at the East Coast Conference's Dowling.
Senior captain Casey Miller (Fairbanks, AK)
chipped in 21 points and was one steal shy of her career-high
(seven), but a game-high 29 from Dowling's Christie
Marrone-including six three-pointers-proved too much offense for
the Warriors.
Junior Sarah Benischek (Shrub Oak, NY) nailed
three from long range as part of her 12 points, while freshman
Kelly Schatzlein (Tolland, CT) tallied a
double-double (10 points, 10 rebounds) in her collegiate debut in
only 19 minutes of play.
In the game, Merrimack was more accurate from the field (44.8%)
than Dowling (42.7%), but the Warriors were outdone on the glass,
52-36, including 20-9 on the offensive boards.
The Warriors open their Conference regular season at home
against the #9 Falcons of Bentley University on Wednesday, November
18 at 5:30pm as part of a twin-bill with the #15 men of Merrimack
and #9 Bentley men's team.
