#15 Men's Basketball Drops Decision at #25 Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA, PA - Despite 21 points and seven boards from
junior Dee
Mency (Hagerstown, MD), the Merrimack men's basketball
Warriors dropped their second straight to open the 2009-10 season
at #25 Philadelphia, 68-64 on Saturday afternoon.
In addition to being out-rebounded 45-26, the Warriors lost the
scoring battle in the paint as well, 38-20. The Rams had two
players with double-doubles, including Malcolm Ingram who scored a
game-high 24 points and grabbed 10 boards.
Senior captain Darren Duncan
(Briarwood, NY) notched 20 points to go with five boards,
five assists and four steals, including one that led to a late
64-63 lead for Merrimack. Duncan was also perfect from the
line at 8-for-8.
Merrimack held Philadelphia to 12% shooting from long range, but
shooting just over 34% for the game kept the Warriors from their
first win of the season.
Head Coach Bert Hammel spoke after the Warriors
second straight loss.
"We did a better job on the defensive end today than we did
against Bentley on Wednesday," Hammel said. "We just need to
keep improving our rebounding and team defense."
The Warriors return to action on Sunday in Philadelphia against
Holy Family University at 1:00pm. Merrimack then resumes
Conference play at Stonehill College on Tuesday, November 24 at
7:30pm following the women's contest.
