Mency's 31 Leads #15 Merrimack to Win at Holy Family
PHILADELPHIA, PA - A career-high 31 points from Dee Mency (Hagerstown,
MD) helped the Merrimack men's basketball team snap a
season-opening two-game losing skid Sunday afternoon with a 87-81
win at Holy Family University as part of a three-game road trip.
Having lost their first two games of the season for the first
time since 2001-02 (to Adelphi, Bentley), the Warriors used 50%
shooting from beyond the arc to notch their first win of the
year. Mency drained a career-high seven three pointers to
help Merrimack stretch the lead to as much as 17.
Sophomore Wayne Mack (Paterson,
NJ) connected on a pair of threes as part of 17 points to
go with seven assists. Senior captain Darren Duncan
(Briarwood, NY) scored 12 points, grabbed eight boards,
dished seven assists and made five steals.
Opening the game on a 13-2 run, the only time the Warriors
trailed was 2-0. Merrimack also forced 26 Tiger-turnovers
that led to 32 Warrior-points.
Head Coach Bert Hammel noted his team's deft
shooting, but acknowledged the need for improved defense.
"We certainly have the offensive fire power to score," Hammel
said. "If we are to be successful in our conference though,
we'll need to tighten up our defensive play for an entire 40
minutes."
The Warriors complete their three-game road trip at Stonehill
College on Tuesday at 7:30pm. The Skyhawks are coming off a
loss to Queens College in overtime and a win over the District of
Columbia.
