Women's Basketball Falls Short at #9 Stonehill
EASTON, MA – The Merrimack women's basketball
Warriors dropped their second game in as many contests to a ranked
opponent with an 85-64 loss at #9 Stonehill on Tuesday evening.
Merrimack sophomore Genn Roy (Granby, MA)
scored a team-high 20 points, while freshman Katie Ganser
(Needham, MA) improved her career-high to 17 points,
including nine points on three from beyond the arc.
The Skyhawks—the favorite to win the Northeast-10 Conference
title—were led by Kelsey Simonds and Emily Rousseau, who
scored 28 and 21 points, respectively.
"Stonehill is a good team, and to beat them we needed to
minimize our mistakes," Head Coach Helen
Williams said of the Warriors loss to the Skyhawks.
"We struggled offensively, but I'm happy with our effort over
the full 40 minutes."
The Warriors led by as much as four (21-17) midway through the
first half (11:29), and held a 29-28 lead at the five-minute mark
before the Skyhawks went on a 16-4 run to close out the first half
at 44-33. Freshman Kelly Schatzlein (Tolland, CT)
grabbed eight first half rebounds as part of 11 in the game and Roy
scored 11 of her 20 points to lead the Warriors in the opening
half.
In a night, Stonehill shot 50-percent (9-of-18) from three-point
range, the Skyhawks led by as much as 23 points in the second half
Tuesday evening at Merkert Gymnasium in Easton.
The Warriors fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Northeast-10
Conference, while Stonehill won their conference-opener and
improved to 5-2 overall.
The Warriors continue their Northeast-10 Conference schedule on
Sunday at Volpe Gym versus the River Hawks of cross-town rival
UMass-Lowell at 1:00pm.
