Men's Basketball Wins Third Straight at Saint Michael's, 80-56
COLCHESTER, VT - Winning their third straight game, the
Merrimack men's basketball Warriors knocked off Saint Michael's
College Saturday afternoon at the Vincent C. Ross Sports Center,
80-56, with help from a game-high 24 points from junior Dee Mency
(Hagerstown, MD).
Senior captain Darren Duncan
(Briarwood, NY) posted 12 points along with a season-high
10 assists, while sophomore Aaron Strothers
(Wareham, MA) scored 14 points in 20 minutes of play.
As part of a 15-4 run to open the game, four of the five
starters for the Warriors scored while Merrimack connected on all
three three-pointers they attempted.
Mency sparked a subsequent 9-0 Warriors run to push the lead to
26-9 when the junior scored six straight including a pair of
transition layups from Duncan. Mency also drained a jumper in
the lane to give the Warriors their biggest lead of the half,
30-11.
Ending a five minute scoring drought and 9-0 run for Saint
Michael's at 3:01, Duncan scored his sixth and seventh point of the
half from the line.
Merrimack would end the half with a breakaway layup by Mency
when he swiped a pass to give him 11 points as one of seven
Warriors that scored.
To open the second half, Merrimack extended its lead with three
triples from Mency in the first five minutes. Senior
Craig
Woehnker (Colts Neck, NJ) capped a 21-10 Merrimack run
to give the Warriors a 60-33 lead with his second three of the game
at the 14:26 mark.
The Warriors enjoyed their largest lead at 73-44 when Jared Brownlee
(Portland, ME) scored in the post from freshman Adam Marshall
(Kent, England).
The fourth straight win in program series history improved
Merrimack to 4-3 (3-2 NE-10) and dropped Saint Mi
chael's to 3-4 (1-4 NE-10) on the year.
The Warriors return to action on Tuesday, December 8 at Southern
New Hampshire University at 7:30pm as the second leg of their
three-game road trip.
