Field Hockey Outdone by No. 2 UMass-Lowell
LOWELL, MA - Facing their third straight top-10 team in as many
games, the Merrimack field hockey Warriors fell to No. 2
UMass-Lowell on Wednesday night in Lowell, 5-1.
Posting another strong outing in between the pipes was freshman
Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, MA) with 16 saves in the complete game.
Bergquist fought off 10 River Hawks shots in a half that all six of
the game's goals were scored.
Providing the offense for the Warriors was junior Jenna
Barbato (Watertown, MA) with her first goal of the season.
She was fed by sophomore Caitlin Kamide
(Southbury, CT) to tie the score in the ninth minute before
the Warriors gave up four unanswered goals.
Despite the loss, Coach Anne Rounce was well aware
of the strides her team had made over the tough three-game road
trip.
“We had a few mental lapses tonight that cost us the game,
but I think we've gained a lot from playing quality opponents
in this opening stretch,” Rounce said. “I think we
played a strong second half against Lowell, but there were
definitely opportunities in the second half that we didn't
convert on.”
The Warriors begin a three-game Northeast-10 home stand on Saturday
against American International at 11:00am on Warrior Field.
