Field Hockey Tops American International, 5-3, in Springfield
SPRINGFIELD, MA - For the second time this season, the Merrimack
field hockey Warriors (8-5, 3-1 NE-10) knocked off the Yellow
Jackets of American International College (3-7, 2-3 NE-10), this
time in Springfield, 5-3, on Saturday afternoon.
Led again by the tandem of freshmen, April Daugherty
(Lincoln, RI) and Jen Otis (Penacook,
NH), Merrimack fought back after falling behind twice in
the first half. Daugherty notched her second multi-goal game
in as many contests, including the game-winner in the
58th minute. Otis scored a pair of goals as well,
the second of which was assisted by Daugherty.
Freshman goalkeeper Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee,
MA) tallied 14 saves in a game the Warriors were out-shot
30-15. Bergquist, who leads the Northeast-10 with nearly ten
saves per game (9.87), stopped a penalty stroke for the Warriors as
well.
Although Head Coach Anne Rounce felt the team
could have played better on the road, she was happy to walk away
with a conference win heading into the playoff race.
"Today wasn't our best effort, but a win's a win when it's in
conference play," Rounce said. "Kerri continues to impress us
whenever she is met with a challenge. I would have liked to
see a few less shots get to her, but we did what we needed to do to
win."
The Warriors play the second of a three-game conference road
trip at Assumption College on Saturday, October 3 at 4:00pm.
Earlier in the year, the Warriors blanked the Greyhounds at Warrior
Field, 3-0.
