Women's Basketball Drops Decision to Southern Connecticut
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack women's basketball
team dropped their third straight contest Tuesday evening at Volpe
Gym, 70-51, to Southern Connecticut State University.
The loss drops the Warriors to 7-12 (5-9 NE-10) on the season,
while the Owls improved to 10-9 (7-7 NE-10).
Junior captain Sarah Benischek
(Shrub Oak, NY) led the Merrimack attack with 14 points,
including 10 in the second half. She also completed a double-double
with 11 boards on the afternoon.
In an evenly matched first half that ended 28-28, Merrimack
trailed only once at the one minute mark and led by as much as ten
5:20 into the half. Junior Tiffany Colon
(Lawrence, MA) led all scorers in the first half with nine
points on 4-of-7 shooting. Colon ended with 13 points and seven
boards on the night.
Merrimack also scored 14 points off turnovers before the break
that saw the Warriors tied for the first time at the midway point
this season.
In the second half, a 14-3 run in favor of the visitors opened up
the second half to double-digits for the remainder of the game from
the 9:32 mark onward.
Merrimack turned the ball over 21 times and lost the bench-scoring
battle 24-0 in the end to drop their third straight Conference
contest.
Head coach Helen Williams said after that contest that her team
would keep working in practice to sharper their game.
“We will continue to work on the little things that win
games, but we'll certainly need to focus on the defensive end
and on the glass against New Haven on Saturday.”
The Warriors return to action on the road at the University of New
Haven (9-10, 7-7 NE-10) on Saturday at 2:00pm in New Haven,
Connecticut.
