Women's Tennis Rolls Past Assumption, 7-2
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack women's tennis team earned a
7-2 win over Assumption Sunday afternoon. The Warriors improve to
2-1 on the year and in the Northeast-10 Conference. Merrimack will
carry its 2-1 conference mark into the spring as the fall schedule
wraps up with the Fairfield Invitational tournament October
16-17.
Merrimack opened the match with three doubles wins to claim a
3-0 lead. Kara Hole (Portsmouth, R.I.) and Mollie Fitzgerald
(Melrose, Mass.) teamed up to capture an 8-5 victory at the top
spot. The pair of Courtney Garvey (Woburn, Mass.) and Alyx Barnes
(Portsmouth, N.H.) cruised to an 8-1 win at the No. 2 slot. Katie
Veasey (Atkinson, N.H.) and Kylie Waddington (South Glastonbury,
Conn.) picked up an 8-4 win in the No. 3 position.
The Warriors earned four victories in singles action en route to
the 7-2 win. Hole claimed a 6-3, 7-6 victory at the top slot. At
the No. 2 spot, Garvey breezed past Assumption's Grace Fox, winning
all 12 games. Barnes glided through the first set 6-1 and pulled
out the second set 7-6 at the No. 3 position.
Waddington rounded out the singles wins for Merrimack, capturing
a 6-4, 6-4 win at the fifth singles slot. Fitzgerald and Siobhan
Licudine both dropped three set decisions. Each player lost the
first set but bounced back to win the second to force a third
