Men's Soccer Finishes 2010 Unbeaten at Home; Draws with St. Michael's 1-1
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack men's
soccer team played St. Michael's to a 1-1 tie Wednesday evening at
Warrior Field. The Warriors move to 9-4-1 on the year and 5-4-1 in
the Northeast-10 with the draw. The Purple Knights pushed their
record to 7-4-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the league.
Merrimack held a commanding 15-5 margin in shots in the first
half but neither squad could notch a goal.
In the 73rd minute of the match, Anthony Stanley latched onto a
corner kick and sent a shot into the net to give St. Michael's a
1-0 margin. The visitors' lead was short-lived as the Warriors
tallied an equalizer four minutes later. Olof Lindhe
(Stockholm, Sweden) dribbled the ball across the top of
the penalty box and slid a pass to Elvert Bodden (La
Ceiba, Honduras), springing the junior in on goal with
only the keeper to beat. Bodden sent a low hard shot past the
rushing netminder and into the lower left corner to knot the score
at 1-1.
The two teams remained tied when regulation time expired. In the
extra frames, Merrimack outshot the Purple Knights 3-2.
In the second overtime period, a Purple Knight striker headed
the ball over the Warriors' goalkeeper who came out to contest a
free ball. The ball slowly bounced towards the open goal, allowing
defender Nick Beal (Winterport,
Maine) to catch up to the ball and clear it before it
crossed the goal line.
With time winding down, a St. Michael's player sent an
uncontested header towards the back post that seemed destined for
the back of the net. As the visitors began celebrating
prematurely, freshman goalkeeper Mattias Drummond
(Partille, Sweden) jumped and made an acrobatic save to
push the ball just wide of the frame.
Making his first start of his young collegiate career, Drummond
made three saves in the match for Merrimack. Logan Kingman turned
aside 12 shots for St. Michael's.
The Warriors registered 26 shots in the game while the visitors
fired 14. Merrimack held a 13-5 edge in shots on goal. The Purple
Knights owned a narrow margin in corner kicks for the game,
4-3.
Before tonight's match with St. Michael's, Merrimack honored its
three seniors: Ben Paradis
(Tiverton, R.I.), Kevin Joyce
(Mansfield, Mass.) and Adam Leone (East
Northport, N.Y.).
