Glazier's Goal Elevates Field Hockey Over St. Michael's, 1-0
COLCHESTER, Vt.- Stephanie Glazier's (Sandown, N.H.) first half score was all that the Merrimack field hockey team needed Wednesday afternoon. The Warriors rolled past St. Michael's 1-0 to escalate their record to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the Northeast-10 Conference. The Purple Knights dip to 2-12 on the year and 0-6 in the league with the loss.
Glazier notched her first goal of the season with 10 minutes remaining in the first period. The junior forward scored from a pass by April Daugherty (Lincoln, R.I.) to give Merrimack a 1-0 lead.
The Warriors held onto the one-goal advantage heading into halftime after owning a 4-2 margin in shots through the opening 35 minutes.
In the second half, St. Michael's threw everything they could at Merrimack in hopes of tying the score. The Purple Knights fired nine shots in the period while limiting the Warriors to one but could not find an equalizer.
Kerri Bergquist (Mashpee, Mass.) made seven saves for Merrimack to earn her second straight shutout and third of the season. Elizabeth Lincoln (Unity, Maine) pitched in with a defensive save in the first half to keep the Purple Knights scoreless. Jackie Stacey turned aside three shots for St. Michael's in the contest.
"Certain players on our team really stepped up to secure the victory today. Kerri was outstanding, especially in the second half. After a long bus ride, I was happy to see some individuals rise to the occasion and help their teammates in the win," said head coach Anne Rounce. "Moving forward, we have an exciting weekend and I know we are all anxious for it to begin."
Merrimack will look for its fourth win over a Northeast-10 opponent this year as the Warriors travel to take on Southern Connecticut State October 30.
