Volleyball Downs Pace on Dig Pink Night, 3-1
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack volleyball team toppled Pace 3-1 Friday evening at Volpe Gym. The Warriors raised awareness for breast cancer by participating in the Dig Pink event and wearing special pink jerseys. Merrimack picked up its fourth consecutive win to improve to 9-13 overall and 7-6 in the Northeast-10. The Setters fell to 17-7 on the year and 9-3 in the league.
Merrimack opened the match with a dominating performance in the first set. The home team took game one by a commanding score of 25-12 while registering no attacking errors. The Setters answered by nabbing game two 30-28 to knot the match score at a set each. The Warriors settled in a claimed the subsequent two sets, winning 25-20 in the game three and edging Pace 25-23 in the final.
Molly Cindric (Westlake Village, Calif.) turned in a 31-kill performance to lead the way for Merrimack. Megan Murray (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) added eight kills while Jenna Riley (Northport, N.Y.) and Nicole Duarte (Windham, N.H.) each posted six. Senior setter Elyse Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill.) dished out 54 assists for Merrimack.
Alyssa Pickert (Tinley Park, Ill.) recorded 18 digs and Heidi Wroblicky (Irvine, Calif.) added 15 in the match. Brianna Trubucco (Canton, Mass.), Cindric and Lorenz also racked up double-digit digs. Cindric dug 14 balls while Trubucco and Lorenz finished with 10 on the night.
The Warriors racked up 10 blocks in the match. Lorenz and Reilly lead the way with six and five denials, respectively. Murray stopped four attacks at the net while Cindric added Merrimack's lone solo block of the night.
Lorenz also paced the squad with three service aces. Pickert put up a pair of serves in the match that Pace could not handle.
"We played with our hearts tonight and displayed some of the best effort we've seen all season. The bottom line was that the team wanted the win," said head coach Joey Pacis. "We're excited to be playing at the level that's expected of us, and we have momentum."
