Field Hockey Falls to No. 3 Lowell
LOWELL, Mass.- The Merrimack field hockey team
suffered a 5-0 defeat to No. 3 UMass Lowell Tuesday evening.
The Warriors fall to 4-6 on the year and 1-2 in the Northeast-10.
With the win, the River Hawks improve to 10-0 overall and 2-0 in
the conference.
Sammy Macy got UMass Lowell on the board with her first goal of
the game. Six minutes later, Macy found Liz Day in front of the
goal for the River Hawks' second goal of the contest.
UMass Lowell headed into halftime with a 3-0 lead when Macy
passed the ball from the endline to Katie Enaire in front of the
goal.
The River Hawks added a pair of goals in the second period. Macy
netted her second score of the game and Rachel McCarthy tallied an
unassisted goal.
UMass Lowell held a 26-3 advantage in shots on the day. The
River Hawks also earned 14 of the game's 15 penalty corners
awarded.
Kerri Bergquist
(Mashpee, Mass.) made 11 saves in the match for the
Warriors. Melanie Hopkins turned aside one shot en route to the
win.
"The team played a great second half and showed what Merrimack
Field Hockey is all about," said head coach Anne Rounce. "We need
to carry our intensity throughout the duration of the game. A
number of midfielders and defensive players stepped up in the
second half."
