Field Hockey Suffers OT Loss to American International
SPRINGFIELD, Mass.- The Merrimack field hockey
team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to American International
Saturday afternoon. The Warriors fall to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in the
Northeast-10. The Yellow Jackets improved to 6-4 on the year and
3-1 against conference opponents.
The scoring erupted in the second half with the two teams
combining for four goals on 15 shots. American International
tallied the game's first two scores. The Yellow Jackets jumped out
to a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the second stanza then increased
the lead to two with a goal at 50:18.
Merrimack clawed back into the game with a goal from Jen
Otis (Penacook, N.H.) three minutes later to cut the
deficit to one. In the final minute of play, Alex
Sakelarios (Chelmsford, Mass.) broke free and potted her
first collegiate goal on a breakaway to knot the score at 2-2.
After 4:33 of overtime action, the Yellow Jackets' Lisa Duckles
fired a shot from the top of the arc that found its way into the
cage for the game-winner.
American International registered 23 shots in the contest while
Merrimack took 10.
Kerri Bergquist
(Mashpee, Mass.) turned in a 13-save performance for the
Warriors.
Merrimack returns to action October 19 after a 10-day hiatus
from competition. The Warriors will host Bentley.
