Men's Soccer Pulls Off Dramatic Come-From-Behind Victory over New Haven
NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.- The Merrimack men's
soccer team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 2-1 overtime win
over New Haven Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. With the win,
the Warriors improved to 8-3 overall and 4-3 in the Northeast-10.
The Chargers sink to 4-7-1 on the year and 3-7 against conference
opponents.
New Haven owned a 1-0 lead at halftime on a goal by Matt
Sarrazin with 12.9 seconds remaining in the period. Sarrazin scored
from just outside the box into the left side of the cage.
Merrimack held the advantage in first half shots 11-2 including
an 8-1 edge in shots on frame.
The Warriors netted an equalizer with 7:13 showing on the clock.
Nicholas Lo Coco
(Gloucester, Mass.) flicked the ball to Olof Lindhe
(Stockholm, Sweden) inside the 6-yard box. Lindhe turned
and fired the ball into the goal for his fourth tally of the
season.
At the end of regulation, Merrimack and New Haven were even at a
goal each.
Just six minutes into bonus soccer, Evan Burokas
(Auburn, Mass.) fed a through-ball to Robbie
Sabadoz (Ottawa, Ont.) down the left side. Sabadoz sent a
low pass across the face of the goal past the Chargers' goalkeeper.
Franklin Pena
(Revere, Mass.) slid to knock the ball into the back of
the net to complete the comeback.
Kevin
Joyce (Mansfield, Mass.) picked up his seventh win of
the 2010 campaign after 96 minutes of work between the pipes for
the Warriors. His counterpart, J.J. Comeau made 10 saves for New
Haven.
Merrimack dominated in the shots department, recording 23 shots
in the match while stifling the Chargers to just four. The Warriors
put 12 shots on frame while New Haven managed just one. The home
side earned all five of the game's corner kicks.
