Women's Hoops Suffers Setback at No. 7 Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H.- The Merrimack women's basketball team fell 80-45 Wednesday evening to No. 7 Franklin Pierce at The Fieldhouse. The Warriors moved to 2-3 overall on the year and 1-2 in Northeast-10 play. The Ravens improved to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the league with the win.

Kelly Schatzlein (Tolland, Conn.) was Merrimack's top scorer in the contest with 14 points and six rebounds. Gennifer Roy (Granby, Mass.) recorded nine points for the Warriors while Taneka Brown (Lynn, Mass.) swiped a career-best eight steals.

Valerie Avebe (Yaounde, Cameroon) poured in Merrimack's first six points of the game and brought the score to 9-6 after just four minutes of play. A three-pointer by Tiffany Colon (Lawrence, Mass.) cut the visitor's deficit to one before a layup by the Ravens would push the score to 14-11 with 11 minutes remaining.

At the break, Franklin Pierce owned a slim five-point advantage, 30-25. Schatzlein paced Merrimack through the first half with 10 points while Roy and Avebe eac h had six to their credit. The Warriors shot 32% from the field in the first half while limiting the home team to 29% shooting.

Franklin Pierce forged ahead in the second half with three 10-0 runs as it claimed its seventh-straight victory. Merrimack connected on 33% of its field goal attempts on the night. The Ravens shot 43% from the floor in the game.

The home team held the advantage in rebounds, 43-30, with each team grabbing 11 offensive boards.

Three Ravens scored in double figures with Tiffany Johnson leading the way with 15. Marielle Giroud and Jewel White had 14 and 13 points, respectively. White also pulled down 14 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Merrimack returns to action December 7 as it welcomes Southern N.H., to the Volpe Gym for a Northeast-10 Conference game.
