Saint Anselm Tops Women's Basketball, 74-60
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack women's basketball
team dropped a 74-60 contest Saturday afternoon at home to Saint
Anselm College.
The Hawks' out-scored the Warriors 24-10 in the paint and
point guard Epiphany Smith scored a game-high 29 points, including
5-of-10 from three-point range. In the game, Saint Anselm shot 50%
from the field (23-of-46) and from long range (7-of-14).
For Merrimack, junior captain Sarah Benischek (Shrub Oak,
NY) was two shy of a career-high with 19 points in 40
minutes of play.
The first half proved to be a three-point shoot-out as the two
teams combined for 11 three-pointers, six by the visiting Hawks and
four from guard Epiphany Smith to account for all 12 of her
points.
Benischek paced the Warriors with 10 points and five boards in the
half with two of Merrimack's five first half threes.
Sophomore Genn Roy (Granby, MA) also hit her first
three shots of the game to end the half with seven points to go
with three assists.
The game was tied at 12 until Smith and the Hawks went on an 18-7
run en route to a 12 point halftime cushion. The visitors also used
13 bench points and 14 second chance points in the first
segment.
In the second half, Saint Anselm led by as much as 19 points and
never led by fewer than 10 points.
Off the bench for the Warriors, Chelsea Shea (South
Burlington, VT) and Taneka Brown (Lynn,
MA) combined for 10 points, including 5-of-7 from the
line.
The Warriors return to action at home when they host Stonehill at
the Volpe Gym on Tuesday at 5:30pm.
