Softball Wins One, Drops Two on Final Day in Florida
CLERMONT, FL – Ending their spring break schedule in
Florida on Saturday, the Merrimack College softball team took down
Nyack, 11-1, before falling to Queens (3-2) in eight innings and
Molloy, 9-5.
Beginning Northeast-10 Conference play on Tuesday, March 30
against Saint Michael's College at home in a doubleheader at
3:30pm, the Warriors bring a 4-7 record back from a wet week in
Florida, as three contests were rained out on the week.
In game one against Nyack, Merrimack senior Casey Conetta
(Darien, CT) hit her first home run of the year, while
classmates Atlee Cahill
(Gloucester, MA) and Jill Bradford
(Stoneham, MA) combined for 7-of-8 from behind the
plate. Cahill went a perfect 4-of-4 in game one to help the
Warriors earn a mercy rule-win in the morning.
In game two, Cahill pitched 7 1/3 innings, allowing just one
earned run, but Merrimack fell 3-2 after Queens (NY) College
notched eight hits after the game went into extra innings.
Conetta would knock a pair of hits to become responsible for two
Warrior runs, while Kristen Lemay (Shrewsbury, MA)
went 4-of-4 and scored both runs for Merrimack. Despite 11
hits as a team, Merrimack committed two errors which made the
difference in the end.
In the nightcap versus Molloy College, Merrimack fell 9-5, but
was not without offensive firepower. Junior Kara Melillo (North
Andover, MA) hit her first career home run and sophomore
Monique Gosselin
(Lawrence, MA) jacked a three-run homer to take a
4-3 lead in the first inning. Conetta also recorded another
two hits to contribute offensively.
Sophomore Alex Gallant (Salem,
NH) got the start in game three, but allowed eight hits
and seven runs to drop to 1-3 on the year. Freshman
Kelli Jo
Deardorff (Bedford, MA) pitched three innings of
relief and allowed one run on three hits.
