Men's Lacrosse Opens Conference Play with 12-4 Win over Saint Michael's
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – The Merrimack men's
lacrosse team built an 8-0 lead at halftime, defeating Saint
Michael's 12-4 Wednesday afternoon in the home and conference
opener at Warrior Field.
The Warriors took control early, using the nation's
top-ranked man-advantage to score four times in as many
opportunities. Greg Melaugh (Billerica, MA) scored
the game's first two goals. Corey Lunney (Little
Silver, NJ) added three first-half tallies, including two
in a 66-second span.
In all, five of Merrimack's first-half goals were netted
by freshmen, as Nick Vazquez (Haverhill, MA) added
the eighth goal with 1:35 left in the second.
“It was a good bounce back win,” said head coach
Mike Morgan. “We had a strong start, and our young guys
played very well. Cory was solid in goal, and his defense was
effective in front of him. It's a good way to open conference
play.”
Merrimack outshot the Purple Knights 28-9 overall and 18-7 on
goal in the first 30 minutes. They also forced four turnovers over
the visitors' 10 clear opportunities.
The Warriors emptied their bench in the second half, as
Matt Marini (Trumbull, CT) and Joe Lamagna
(Andover, MA) added late fourth-quarter goals. Lunney
finished with four goals, giving the freshman 17 goals and 22
points in four games.
Cory Spinale (Wakefield, MA) recorded 10 saves
in the win in 45 minutes of action, improving to 3-1 on the season.
Merrimack finished 6-for-8 overall on the man-advantage and
killed off all five of the Purple Knights' chances.
