Baseball Falls to Assumption in Non-Conference Bout Thursday, 5-1
WORCESTER, MA – Snapping a four game win streak, the
Merrimack College baseball team (4-2) dropped a non-Conference
contest to Assumption College Thursday afternoon, 5-1.
Head coach Joe Sarno was happy with the
effort of his Warriors, but still concerned with their ability to
capitalize.
"Had we taken advantage of runners in scoring position in the
first couple innings, we would have won." said Sarno.
Senior captain Brendan Pyburn
(Peabody, MA) continued his hot hitting with a fourth
straight multi-hit game on Thursday. The senior smacked
a double in the top of the eighth and eventually scored the only
Warrior run on the afternoon on an RBI single from Mike Dooling (Milford,
CT). Pyburn also stole his fourth base of the season
in the first inning.
On the mound, sophomore Chris Pinette
(Norwood, MA) threw four scoreless innings before being
touched up for three runs in the fifth. Pinette threw 82
pitches over six innings and struck out seven on the afternoon.
"Pinette pitched a very good game and wouldn't have given
up those three runs if we have taken advantage earlier," added
Sarno.
The Greyhounds ace, Joe Green, improved to 4-0 on the season
after going 7.2 innings.
On the day, Merrimack did the job defensively without committing
an error for the third time this season.
The Warriors are back in action on Saturday when they travel to
Southern Connecticut State University for a Conference doubleheader
in New Haven, Connecticut with the Owls beginning at noon.
