Women's Lacrosse Edged by #7 Stonehill, 13-11
EASTON, MA – The Merrimack women's lacrosse
team dropped its first game of the season, losing to #7 Stonehill,
13-11, Thursday afternoon in its conference opener.
Searching for their first-ever win over the Skyhawks and their
second victory over a nationally-ranked opponent in as many games,
the Warriors led 9-7 late, but the hosts rallied as Heather
Sullivan scored two of her three goals in the final 10 minutes,
including the go-ahead tally on a free-position shot with 8:33
remaining to take the 11-10 lead. In all, the Skyhawks netted six
of the final eight goals to improve to 2-1 on the season.
“I'm proud of how our team hustled and worked
together,” said head coach Corinne Baker. “We had a
strong first half, but the mistakes we made led to our loss.
We're fortunate to get this game out of the way early in the
season, and we'll clean up our play and get ready for
Saturday.”
Mia Basile (Longmeadow, MA) led the way for the
Warriors, with three first-half goals and five points overall,
giving her a team-high 11 on the season.
Merrimack forced 13 Skyhawk turnovers in the first half, taking
a 7-6 lead at halftime behind free-position goals from Mary
Pasquantonio (Plainville, MA) and Maria DeStefano
(Eliot, ME).
Kelly Pasquantonio (Plainville, MA) netted
three goals, four points and caused five turnovers in the loss,
while Jamie-Lee Whiteway (Billerica, MA) stopped
13 shots.
