Softball Drops a Pair to CW Post Thursday
BROOKVILLE, NY – The Merrimack College softball team
dropped a pair of games to C.W. Post on Thursday afternoon in their
final tune-up before the Northeast-10 Conference schedule starts on
Friday. In game one, Merrimack fell 7-2 before being blanked,
6-0, in game two.
The Pioneers, who until this week had been ranked in the
national polls, own an 18-6 overall record and 13-3 mark on their
home diamond.
In game one, senior Atlee Cahill (Gloucester,
MA) got the start and went six innings allowing 12 hits
and six earned runs.
"Atlee pitched a great game and we hit well in game one," head
coach Elaine Schwager said following the
doubleheader. "We made several defensive mistakes but C.W.
Post is a quality team. Overall it was a great day to prepare
for the start of our Conference schedule. We are taking it
one game at a time and looking to set high expectations for
ourselves."
Sophomore Monique Gosselin (Lawrence, MA) gave
Merrimack an early 2-0 lead in the third on a double to left
center, but C.W. Post scored a run in the subsequent four innings,
including a four-run fifth.
In game two, sophomore Alex Gallant (Salem, NH)
got the start and pitched five innings before being spelled by
freshmen Courtney Parker (Bellingham, MA) and
Curran Hubbard (Laconia, NH) for a combined
inning. Senior Casey Conetta (Darien, CT)
was the only Warrior with any luck against Pioneers' ace
Christina Berardi, knocking two of Merrimack's three hits on
the afternoon.
Junior Kara Melillo (North Andover, MA)
accounted for the Warriors third hit in the top of the seventh
during an attempted rally, but three Warriors were left stranded to
end the game.
With the losses, Merrimack falls to 4-9 on the year in
non-Conference play.
The Warriors begin their Northeast-10 Conference schedule on
Friday when they host the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire
University at 3:00pm on Volpe Field in a doubleheader.
