Softball Swept at Southern Connecticut, 6-3; 8-0
NEW HAVEN, CT- Despite jumping out to a 2-0 lead in game one,
the Merrimack College softball team (10-13) dropped a pair of road
games to Southern Connecticut State University (20-8) Saturday
afternoon on Pelz Field.
Game one ended at 6-3 while game two was an eight-run rule in
the fifth inning, 8-0.
“Our bats were unusually quiet today and Southern
certainly hit the ball well,” said head coach Elaine
Schwager. “We just had a tough day finding any
rhythm, but we're looking forward to getting back at it
tomorrow against New Haven.
Sophomore Monique Gosselin
(Lawrence, MA) got the Warriors offense clicking with a
two-run double to left center in the third inning, but three hits
and as many runs from the Owls in inning two gave the home team the
lead for good.
In game one, Kristen Lemay
(Shrewsbury, MA) went 3-for-3, but could not round the
bases to score.
“Kristen played great today and was solid on both sides of
the ball,” said Schwager.
Sophomore Alex Gallant (Salem,
NH) and freshman Kelli Jo
Deardorff (Bedford, MA) split the six innings of game
one, allowing four hits and three runs each.
In game two, Merrimack amassed only three hits, while Southern
Connecticut went off for 11 hits and eight runs, including four
runs in the first inning off six hits.
One bright spot of the nightcap was sophomore Amanda Zanni
(Reading, MA) from the plate.
“Amanda did a great job working the count and going
2-for-2 in game two,” said Schwager. “As a team,
we'll all have to bring our bats tomorrow against New
Haven.”
The Warriors only other hit was in the third inning from
Jamie Millett (Hudson, MA) to center field before
she stole her sixth base of the season.
The Warriors are back in action on Sunday against the top-ranked
Chargers of New Haven (22-2, 12-0 NE-10) in West Haven, Connecticut
for a 12:00pm doubleheader.
