Softball Suffers Sweep at #14 New Haven
WEST HAVEN, CT – Held scoreless through game one (4-0) and
on the short end of an abridged 10-1 loss in game two, the
Merrimack College softball team fell to #14 University of New
Haven—the top-ranked team in the East Region—Sunday
afternoon in West Haven, Connecticut.
Merrimack (10-14, 6-6 NE-10) fell behind 3-0 in the first inning
of game one, but held the Chargers (24-2, 14-0 NE-10) scoreless
over the next three innings. The Warriors showed life in the
third inning with hits from Rachel Lozeau
(Nashua, NH) and Kristen Lemay
(Shrewsbury, MA) with two outs, but the base-runners were
stranded as all five Warriors who reached base on the afternoon
would be.
Freshman Kelli Jo
Deardorff (Bedford, MA) pitched 5.1 innings in relief
to allow two hits for one run in game one.
In the second game, Merrimack took a 1-1 tie through the top of
the third before the Chargers scored nine runs in the bottom half
of the inning on seven hits.
Deardorff got the start in game two, but fell to 3-2 on the year
after giving up four runs in 2.2 innings.
To tie the score at one in the second, senior captain Emily Cummings
(Andover, MA) singled through the left side to score
Kara
Melillo (North Andover, MA) who reached on an error.
Lemay and senior captain Jill Bradford
(Stoneham, MA) tallied the other two hits for the Warriors
in a game called in the fifth due to the run-differential.
Merrimack is back in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday
when they travel to Franklin Pierce for a doubleheader at 3:00pm in
Rindge, New Hampshire.
