Late Homers not enough for Softball to avoid Sweep from Assumption
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Despite two seventh-inning homers from
Merrimack College in game one of a doubleheader with Assumption
College, the Warriors could not produce enough offense to avoid the
doubleheader sweep on Tuesday at Volpe Field.
With the losses, Merrimack dropped to 11-20 overall and 7-11 in
Conference play. The Greyhounds move two games over .500
overall (16-14) and in Conference play (10-8).
Falling behind 6-0 in game one, Merrimack scored their first run
in the seventh inning on an Emily Cummings
(Andover, MA) home run and would later see sophomore
Alex
Gallant (Salem, NH) send out a two-run homer, but that
was all the Warriors could muster in a 6-3 loss of game one.
In an 8-2 defeat in game two, Merrimack surrendered five runs in
the first two innings and could not make up ground, going scoreless
over the final five innings to the Greyhounds three runs.
On the afternoon, Merrimack 16 runners stranded with an even
eight in each outing. The Warriors also committed three
costly errors that led to four unearned runs in the first and one
in the nightcap.
To lead the Merrimack offense, junior Kara Melillo (North
Andover, MA) tallied three base-hits on the day and an RBI
in game one.
The Warriors are back in action tomorrow when they host
Stonehill College (14-12-1, 9-7 NE-10) for a 3:00pm doubleheader at
Volpe Field.
