Baseball Slowed by Bentley at Home Thursday, 7-1
NORTH ANDOVER, MA – Before freshman Beau Batchelor
(Peabody, MA) hit an RBI double to left field with two
outs in the ninth, the Merrimack College baseball team was held
scoreless against a Bentley University team that left Warrior
Diamond with a 7-1 win on Thursday.
The Conference loss dropped the Warriors to 14-14 (9-12 NE-10)
on the season, while the Falcons improved to 19-18 (12-7 NE-10) on
the year.
“Our consistency has proven to be the variable all
year,” said head coach Joe Sarno following the loss that
dropped Merrimack to .500. “When we hit and pitch like
we know how we can compete with any team in the league. Right
now it's just a matter of believing in our bats and continuing to
play good defense behind our solid pitching.”
On the mound for the Warriors was junior Jake Halloran
(Stoneham, MA) who went 5.0 innings, but fell to 0-1 after
allowing five earned runs on eight hits. For the Falcons,
sophomore Dan Murphy threw a complete game and shutout through 8.2
innings as the Warriors recorded five hits on the day.
With one of the five hits, senior captain Brendan
Pyburn (Peabody, MA) extended his hit
streak to seven games, while he maintains the team's top batting
average at .327, good for 11th in the league.
Junior Matt Cataldo
(Tyngsborough, MA) also recorded a hit for the second
straight time that he has appeared in the lineup, as the second
baseman played the final two innings.
The Warriors will close out the week-long series with the
Falcons at DeFelice Field in Waltham on Friday at 3:30pm, but this
rubber match with be a non-Conference duel.
