Millett's Monster Weekend Concludes with Softball Sweep of Saint Rose
ALBANY, NY – Snapping a six-game skid, the Merrimack
College softball team pulled off a doubleheader sweep (11-4; 4-3)
at the College of Saint Rose on Sunday behind the powerful bat of
junior Jamie Millett
(Shrewsbury, MA).
"The key today was being able to score in the early innings as
well as late," said head coach Elaine Schwager.
"Jamie obviously had a great weekend with a cycle over both
games today. Amanda [Zanni] also sparked us in the game two
comeback win with a big triple to start the fifth."
In game one, the Warriors matched a season-high 11 runs on 13
hits from seven different players in an 11-4 win. The first
four batters for Merrimack recorded multi-hit games, including
Millett who continued her hot hitting to go a single shy of
the cycle with six runs batted in.
After Merrimack fell behind 3-2 in the second inning on a
three-run homer, the Warriors and Millett answered with a three-run
jack of her own to put the visitors back on top by two and for
good. The second baseman was not done in the fifth as she
tallied three of six Warrior RBIs in the next inning on a
base-clearing triple—her first of the season.
With four hits and as many RBIs against Le Moyne on Saturday,
Millett finished the weekend with a staggering .533 batting
average, 1.200 slugging percentage and 10 runs batted in.
Senior Atlee Cahill
(Gloucester, MA) pitched a complete game in the opener,
allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four.
Cahill improved to 5-8 on the year with the win.
In game two, sophomore Monique
Gosselin (Lawrence, MA) bombed a two-run homer to
nullify a 3-1 Golden Knights lead in the fifth inning on the way to
a three-unearned run inning. Millett again registered a hit
in the first inning, but did not record an RBI for the first time
in four games.
Sophomore Alex Gallant
(Salem, NH) got the start for Merrimack on the mound and
improved to 4-6 on the year with a three-hitter and not allowing an
earned run in 4.0 innings.
Freshman Kelli Jo
Deardorff (Bedford, MA) recorded her first save of the
year in game two while not allowing a hit over three innings on the
way to a 4-3 victory for the Warriors.
Said Schwager of the four-game series in New York, "It was a
solid weekend all together and we pulled through on Sunday
because of the confidence we had gained throughout the
weekend."
The Warriors conclude a six-game road trip at Bentley on
Tuesday, April 27 with a 3:00pm doubleheader in Waltham.
